. Drag a Vertical guide and place it at the corner of the microchip as in the below image.

Get the Rectangular Marquee Tool and make a selection like in the below image. Hit Command+U to bring up the Hue/Saturation dialog and set Lightness to -20. Then go to Select > Inverse. Hit Command+U again and set Lightness to -40 this time and deselect
.

Shading
Apply a Gradient Overlay Layer Style to the "Top Extrude" layer using these settings: Blend Mode => Overlay, Opacity => 50%, Gradient => Black, White, => Style => Linear, Angle => 90. Then apply a Gradient Overlay to the "Top" layer and use these settings: Blend Mode => Normal, Opacity => 45%, Gradient => Black, White, Reverse => Checked, Style => Radial, Scale => 150%
and drag the center of the gradient on the canvas to get something similar to the below image.

Shade the Dent
Create a new layer above the "Top Extrude" layer and name it "Shade". Get the Rectangular Marquee Tool and make a selection that is as wide as the dent like in the below image. Get the Gradient Tool, pick Foreground to Transparent and set Foreground Color to Black. Fill the selection with the gradient as below. Then Alt-click the line between "Top Extrude" and "Shade" layers to mask the shade. Hit Command+D to deselect
.

Bevel
Command-click the "Top" layer thumbnail to load the selection and select this layer in the Layers Panel. Get the Rectangular Marquee Tool, move the selection 2 pixels up by pressing the Up Arrow Key twice. Go to Select > Inverse. Holding down the Alt key, make a selection like in the below image to substract from the current selection. Hit Command+U and set Lightness to 50 to lighten the left edge of the top part
.

What People Said About This Post:

  1. Amazing Eren…… Top quality work…. It does take a lot of time, but its worth it… This procedure can be used to create any shiny icons with the isometric perspective….

I wonder if it is easier to create this in Illustrator? ….. but PS definitely gives more flexibility.

The shiny gradient is very well chosen… ever step needs a pat on your back :) Bravo

      Richie,
      i’m glad you liked.
You’re right, 30 or 45 degrees of rotation followed by a horizontal 60% scale can be used to create almost any isometric stuff.
      Thanks for your nice comment:)

    • Eren Göksel

      Jon,
is there any chance that you’re using the Gradient Tool instead of applying a Gradient Overlay Layer Style?
