In this Awesome★ Photoshop tutorial, i’m going to show you how to create a cool looking colorful Plexi text effect. Throughout this tutorial we’ll create letters separately, getting some help from the Actions. Have Fun.

Here is the Final Image
Before we start let’s see the final image we’ll create through out this tutorial. You can download the layered PSD document here.

Tutorial Time:

Difficulty Level: ★★★★★
No files needed

Create a New Document
Let’s start by creating a new document which is 900 x 900 pixels at a resolution of 300 pixels/inch, make sure Color Mode is set to RGB and name the document "A". In this tutorial we’ll create each letter in a different document.

The First Letter
Fill the Background Layer with 55% gray. Get the Type Tool and type "A". Set font to a favorite of yours, i’m gonna use Bauhaus 93 font and gonna set font size to 200 pt. Set Text Color to 40% gray. Rename the layer as "Text", this will be important later.

Create the Other Documents
As i said, we’ll create the letters one by one, and in different documents. Now go to Image > Duplicate, name the new document "W" and hit OK. Double click the "A" layer thumbnail and change the text to "W". Go to Image > Duplicate once more and name the new document "E". Double click the "W" layer thumbnail and change the text to"E" and i set the Font size to 205pt for that one, because letter E is a little smaller in this font.

Action
Go back to "A.psd" document. Because we’ll create the letters separately, recording what we’re doing for the first one using the Actions Palette is a good idea. Then we’ll play the action back for the other letters. Open the Actions Palette by going to Window > Actions. Open the Actions Palette Menu and choose New Set. Name the set "Glassy Text" and hit OK. Click the Create New Action button, name the action "Glassy" and hit Record. The first thing we’ll do is to duplicate the "Text" layer and name it "Shadow". We’re going to need this layer later so make it invisible for now and drag it below the "Text" layer in the Layers Palette.

Rotate and Scale
Select the "Text" layer in the Layers Palette. Hit Command+T (Ctrl +T for Windows) and set the Rotation to 30 degrees and apply by hitting the Commit Transform button or double clicking inside the selection. Now hit Command+T again and set Vertical Scale to 60% and apply.

Apply Gradient
Apply a Gradient Overlay Layer Style and use these settings: Gradient => Black, White, Blend Mode => Normal, Opacity => 50%, Style => Linear, Angle => 90 and Scale => 130.

Organize Layers
Duplicate the "Text" layer, create a new layer on top and name it "Extrude". Select both "Extrude" and "Text copy" layer and merge them. Duplicate the merged "Extrude" layer and name it "Bottom".

Extrude
Command-click the "Extrude" layer thumbnail to load the selection. Select this layer on the Layers Palette as well. Make sure the Move Tool is selected in the Toolbox and holding down the Alt key press down arrow 75 times [make sure zoom is set to 100%, go to View > Actual Pixels to make it 100%] to extrude the text and deselect.

Bottom and Top
Duplicate the "Bottom" layer and name it "Top". Go back to "Bottom" layer, set Blend Mode to Multiply. Move the "Bottom" layer 75 pixels down (make sure the Move Tool is selected, holding down the Shift key, pressing the Down Arrow key will move it down 10 pixels, so do the math :)) and set Layer Opacity at 75%. Set Layer Opacity for the "Top" layer 90%.

Add Some Color
Select "Top", "Bottom" and "Extrude" layers in the Layers Palette and hit Command+E to merge them. Name the merged layer "A1". Apply a Gradient Overlay Layer Style to "A1" layer using these settings: Gradient => Spectrum, Blend Mode => Overlay, Opacity => 30%, Angle => -180 degrees and Scale => 150%.

hi Jackson,
i’ll be glad to help you, if you can tell me more about your problem.
Thanks.
Hello
really awesome tuts. each and every tutorial is awesome and perfect from EG. i think its because EG is awesome. no doubt we are all learning a lot with new ideas and perfection.
I totally agree with Ciao.
but i am having the only problem with shadow. shadow remains the same in other letters and it does not change. anyways, trying to rectify it myself.
thanks a lot EG
Ayaan
Hey Ayaan,
thank you very much for your kind comments.
i will try to figure out the problem you had about the shadow.
is there a chance that you have flattened the shadow text layer somehow so the action could not change the text.
i could not think of anything else
you are absolutely correct because a teacher is always right no doubt. there was a mistake @ my end. i did not take any help with the action file provided by you and tried many times myself to figure it out about the shadow and finally the problem has been resolved. now the action recorder works great.
thanks a lot once again.
Ayaan
YO Eren
in step 20 to select “A1″, “A2″, “A3″, “Text” and “Reflection” layers to duplicate them the program does not respond to my cilick ctrl+j to duplicat why ….please
Hey Brian,

i did this tutorial and really liked it …but at the end when i play the action an the other letters …the shadow of the letter A applys to the rest of my letters!so i get the W and the E with the A shadow .Wherețs my mistake …couldțnt find it :D all in all very nice tutorial . gz
Hey razvan,
any chance that you have flattened the shadow text layer so the action could not change the text. Hope it helps, please let me know if it doesn’t.
thanks.
Now this is what I call a Tutorial.
It’s complete with things you need.
It’s precise and easy to follow.
Totally Awesome!
Thanks!
hey which version of adobe did you use??
Hey anthony,
i’m using cs4 extended, this one should work with earlier versions as well. Let me now if you’re having any problems.
nice work!
great tut the only thing i have a problem with is that when i start a new letter using your action i get “the object layer “TEXT” is not available”?
… :-D figured it out awesome tut ty
This is beautiful work.
I am lost with the image, though, when it comes to creating the vertical areas that connect the layers; what I mean by this, and it’s somewhat confusing to explain is, for example, the left side of the “foot” of the “A”– the edge that connects each layer thus making it fully 3-D. I am unable to do this. I am either missing something or doing a step incorrectly.
Thanks in advance.
-Matty-
Hey Matty,
if you can provide a link to your image or send it to contact@psawesome.com
i’ll be happy to help you.
Thanks
What a great stuff, it’s very hard to convert it in my way,.. but i got it right. I just want to share this stuff to my blog..

Y
Amazing !
But I would like to know what is the name of the police of character?
Thxxx :) .
Hello Eren,
I am very happy with your site, already now are your tuts outstanding and much better compared to many other PSD tuts sites. Keep on going.
I can’t merge the Extrude layer with the Text copy layer on Step 8, pls help…
cute!
hocama eline sağlık.all of health for your hand :)))))
It took me like 1 1/2 hours to complete the first letter, everything was fine until I applied the action to the other letters. they all appeared with the shadow of the first letter. :(
I did it so I deserve to download the action that actually works not like mine!
Amazing tuts BTW! I love them all!
hi, is an amazing tuto, but i can´t inderstand the step 21, i select the 3 layers, and press control+clic in each one, , after, i press backspace but nothing, still has the selection and the gaussian blur, why?
Hi jorge,
thanks, i forgot writing “thumbnail” and now it is fixed.
in the Layers Panel, only the “Glow” layer should be selected. Then Command-click the “A3″ layer T H U M B N A I L to load the selection. Then holding down the SHIFT key, Command-click “A2″ and “A1″ layers to add to selection.
Then hit Backspace to clear the selection from the “Glow” layer.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
Diggin’ the results, I tried it out and successfully created my first letter but
the actions are not working, it keeps saying numerous things are currently not available, I tried downloading your actions but they were worse
I am using PCS4 just in case, can you help?
Hi Tom,
make sure your text layer is named “Text” before you run the action, it is case sensetive, so the “T” should be capital.
Hope it helps.
oh wow that worked like magic, thanks!
I have a similar problem, I did not finish this tutorial in one go. Now I can’t add the action, it doesn’t appear to be saved. Not sure if I can do anything about this?
Hey Hayley,
did you have any problems creating the first letter?
Had some problems that I overcame but other than that no.
A really AWESOME tutorial …
It is more than COOL …
And thx for providing the action file … That was of a great use … Cause I made some problems … :D
THX for ur hard work …
hi i’ve been working on this for a while, and i’m not quite sure how to put all the letters into one file. this may be a simple thing that im just not getting but every time i do try it asks me to merge the group so that way i can copy it onto another file. by doing so the letters become distorted. any advice??
oh never mind i overlooked something i believe -_-;;
thanks for the tut. :]
Hey Mia,
the answer is at steps 23 and 24.
let me know if you need any help
Thanks for the best PSD tutorials
I love it so mush
wow amazing !!! i like it ! make more tutorial again, i’ll wait ! terimakasih !
Eren, thank you so much for this really awesome tutorial. The effect is so amazing and your tutorial truly is made for dummies like me. THANKS!
I’m having the same problem like some others. If I create the letters step by step everyting is fine, but if I start the action I always get the shadow of the first letter. I recorded the action meanwhile for the third time, always the same problem. I can’t figure out what’s wrong. Help is much appreciated. Thanks.
Hey parsleybrain,
any chance that you have flattened the shadow text layer so the action could not change the text. Hope it helps, please let me know if it doesn’t.
Eren, do you mean by flatten that I merged the shadow text layer with the background layer? No, I haven’t. Duplicating the text layer, renaming the text layer to shadow and dragging the shadow layer below the text layer in the layer stack are the first steps in the action. When I start to record the action I’ve two layers, one background layer and one text layer. I’m truly confused.
Because duplicating the “Text” layer and renaming it are the first steps of the action, the “shadow” and the “text” should be the same. But you always get the shadow of the first letter. I think duplicating the layer for the shadow might be out of the loop in your action. If you wish you can send the action file to me at contact@psawesome.com and i’ll have a look to find what’s wrong.
That’s really nice, Eren, I’ll send you my actions. My actions will not run properly because I work with the German version of CS3. That’s also the reason why I can’t use your action but for a reference to compare with my action. Your action doesn’t run proper in my system because of the difference in language.
Hey parsleybrain i guess i found what went wrong;
If you double click the text layer while recording the action, even if you only changed the color, it records all attributes of the text layer including the text. But if you change the color from the Character Panel, it only records the color change and i didn’t know that till now. Thanks to you now i know it and i guess i should add this explanation to the tutorial.
I hope that solves your problem.
Thanks
did you really pressed 75x times ?!?
because I did and it seems to me is a bit to much cuz my final result looks like this after following your tut:
http://yfrog.com/5natutaj
Hey,
your text seems to be small, or may be you pressed 75 times while you’re zoomed out, because it moves more than one pixel if so.
Thats a very nice effect, really like it.
Hey Mate, great final outcome, and well taught, thanks for that. Quick question;
At Step 10, Giving ‘A1′ layer an overlay colour. I open up blending options go to gradient overlay set the blend mode to Overlay and the colour then doesn’t show. I have CS4, The colour shows on ‘Normal’ blend mode but as you can guess it looses the punch overlay should give. But mine no matter what opacity or gradient or scale, it doesn’t show a colour if on ‘overlay’ – Any idea’s? thanks again mate, great tut
